It was long thought that environmental needs and capitalism could not co-exist on a large scale due to the exploitative nature of modern business. This may be true for the most part, but Patagonia, the sustainable clothing company, has been giving us hope.
In an age when environmental thinking is becoming more and more "fashionable" (for example, almost all car companies are heavily investing in electric), Patagonia has went a step further and actually operates sustainably and gives back to environmental causes*, unlike companies such as Tesla, who put up a front of sustainability while partaking in unsustainable practices.
This commitment to sustainability has contributed massively to Patagonia's success, so continuing on this path, founder Yvon Chouinard has given most of his $3 Billion company the "Patagonia Purpose Trust and the Holdfast Collective", a group of environmental nonprofits. Perhaps we will see more successful and truly environmental companies spring up in the near future following Patagonia's footsteps.
*"As a certified B-Corp and California Benefit Corporation, Patagonia was already donating one percent of its sales each year to grassroots activists, and it intends to keep doing so. Fewer than 6,000 companies around the world are certified as B-Corp businesses. They have to meet strict environmental, social and governance standards and benchmarks set by B Labs to gain certification."
