(Oyster Reef made from old oyster shells)
We don't always think about it, but oyster shells, just like plastic bags, can be re-used as well. In fact, old oyster shells have already been used in a wide array of applications, including:
Acting as basis for reefs and reducing coastal erosion
Containing calcium used to reduce soil acidity and provide nutrients for plants in agriculture
Filtering pollutants and heavy metals from water in water filtration plants
Acting as aggregates or additives to concrete and other construction projects to improve strength, durability and other properties
Thinking of novel ways to reuse everything in everyday life can help reduce our climate impact and perhaps find new markets for things previously thought of as trash!
